London Fashion Week Mens: Recap

Fashion Weeks

What London designers think you should wear next winter (2018/19). Be advised, here’s what they definitely want you to throw over board: skinny pants and every cliché you’ve acquired about masculinity.

Volume

Skinny: never more — slim: maybe for trousers, if you must — oversize: always!

Ripping apart the classics

The MAN project by Topman and Fashion East helped to kickstart the careers of the likes of JW Anderson or Kim Jones. The recipients are selected by a panel of industry experts such as Tim Blanks (Business of Fashion) or Sam Lobben (Mr Porter).

One of the recipients this season is Stefan Cooke. For his autumn winter collection 18 he rips apart menswear classics, like the tennis jumper or the mac, or fakes them like his trompe l’oeuil denim leggings. A fresh perspective on menswear.

A collection for club kids that have grown up …

Tonsure’s autumn winter 18 collection features a lot of the elements of what the club kids wear at the moment: a bit of builder’s chic, some orange, the puffa, the bomber, the dadcore trainers. However, it comes as a refined, grown up version in fine Merino wool. Or a lightweight nylon with a Prince of Wales check print – that has been highlighted to become a new check pattern to resemble wool (Tonsure is supported by The Woolmark Company).

… and the ones that don’t wanna grow up at Michiko Koshino

Gender fluidity

A second recipient of the MAN project by Topman and Fashion East is Art School by the creative partnership of Eden Loweth and Tom Barratt. Art School is their “platform to express their collective ideas both in art and design using luxury fashion as a communicative tool to explore contemporary queerness.” And so it comes as no surprise that their message for autumn winter 18 seems to be: no matter your body type, gender or age – wear whatever the fuck you like.
